say the love of God is an addiction
we seek, like a mid-morning caffeine fix
knowing the headache to follow – the blind
rage which pursues through the day – an old bitch
stalking the sweet scent of her missing pups
from door to door. nothing will sate desire
save the thing itself. even those thought weaned,
or in withdrawals, feel incomplete waking
without the once familiar sounds and smells
which gave purpose to rising from their beds;
the private meditation of rolling liquid
words around tongues; the absence of something
sometimes sweet, often bitter, but a taste
that’s filled with enough heaven for the day.
